Midwifing the New – How the Law of Three Changes Everything

An Invitation to See Differences, Inner Blocks, and Everyday Grace.

There’s a simple but powerful pattern woven into life—felt in our inner growth, relationships, and moments of healing. It’s called the Law of Three, reflected in the Trinity: Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit.

For anything truly new to emerge, three forces are always in motion:

  1. Impulse—a spark to begin, to grow
  2. Resistance—the pushback we encounter
  3. Grace—a reconciling presence that brings new life

This isn’t just theory—it’s a living rhythm we all experience.

Inside us
We feel longing to change—and then face old habits, fear, or doubt. If we simply stay open and kind with ourselves in that moment, something unfolds: a clearer insight, peace, or renewed strength. That’s grace at work.

In the world around us
Communities often split—rich vs. poor, insiders vs. outsiders. The Law of Three invites a third path: restorative love that doesn’t just shift power, but heals deep wounds.

A transformative invitation

Cynthia writes, “The Law of Three teaches us that a new kingdom is just waiting to be born.” It’s not somewhere out there—it’s here, now. So we ask:

What wants to be born here?

Maybe it’s a spark to spend more time in quiet, to speak up with kindness, or to repair a relationship.

How can we midwife it?

We hold both our impulse and our resistance—without forcing change—then stay gently present. Often, a third force emerges: clarity, compassion, or a new way forward.

Living the Spirit

When we pray in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we enter a three-fold dance: impulse, resistance, and grace. We’re invited to step into this flow with intention and trust.

An invitation

The Law of Three helps us move beyond simplistic thinking. It teaches us to hold tension with hope. Even when it feels stuck, transformation is possible.

Perhaps this is Jesus’s Kingdom—not a distant place, but a way of living with courage, compassion, and trust in what’s emerging beyond our struggles.

May our hearts stay open.
May we see the third force stirring among us.
And may this sacred pattern shape our prayers, our relationships, and our days.

Author’s Note:
This reflection draws from Cynthia Bourgeault’s rich work on the Law of Three. Her book The Holy Trinity and the Law of Three is described by Spirituality & Practice as “an ambitious and scholarly tome”—deeply insightful, yet known to feel quite dense for readers without theological training. My hope is to convey the same powerful wisdom in warm, everyday language, inviting anyone—regardless of background—to recognize and live into this sacred pattern.
