In this evocative teaching Cynthia Bourgeault invites us to consider life and death through the illuminating lens of Hungarian-born Jesuit Ladislaus Boros, drawing from his mystical classic The Mystery of Death.
Following Boros’ lead, Cynthia invites us into an exploration of the moment of death, from both a personal and Christological perspective. We are asked how we can live more fully into Boros’ challenging, key insight that “Death gives man the opportunity of posing his first completely personal act; therefore, it is the moment above all others for the awakening of consciousness, for freedom, for the encounter with God…” What difference would it make in our lives here and now if we believe and act from this insight? How would that impact the choices we make, the priorities we set? What might be required of us to grow into such a trusting intimacy with our own death? Finally, how might Jesus’ passage through the same sacramental moment have subtly shifted the foundations of the world?
From the majestic remote island of Holy Isle just off the coast of Scotland, Cynthia Bourgeault and a group of retreatants ponder these questions and more. Through engaging with these recorded sessions from that event, we can ponder these questions in our current context and into the future, sourcing from the marrow of our own lives.
