Mystery of Death: An Online Retreat via Zoom with Cynthia Bourgeault at Mepkin Abbey

September 27, 2021 - October 1, 2021

In this teaching retreat based on the recently republished mystical classic by Hungarian-born Jesuit Ladisalus Boros, we will be exploring the moment of death from both a personal and a christological perspective. Following Boros’ lead, we will attempt to live our way into his challenging insight (received through mystical revelation) that “Death gives man the opportunity of posing his first completely personal act; therefore, it is the moment above all others for the awakening of consciousness, for freedom for the encounter with God…” What difference would it make in our lives here and now if we really and truly believed that? How would it affect the choices we make, the priorities we set? What might be required of is to grow into such a trusting intimacy with our own death? Finally, how might Jesus’s passage through this same sacramental moment have subtly shifted the foundations of the world? Surrounded by monastic silence and prayer, we will ponder these deep questions together, not in our heads, but in the marrow of our lives.

The Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault is an internationally known Episcopal priest, author, and retreat leader. She spearheaded the effort to return The Mystery of Death to print and contributed an extensive introductory commentary to the new edition (Monkfish Publishing 2016.) It is highly recommended that retreatants purchase and begin to work with this book in advance of the retreat; but in any case, electronic copies of the introductory commentary will be made available to all registered participants upon request.
